Unscripted: The Archive
Unscripted has evolved and changed over the years, but the core goal of the series has never changed. The Unscripted series was created to allow folks to gain an insight into the minds of artists, musicians, writers, and creatives of all kinds while also providing them a memorable experience. Below is a short archive of some of the Unscripted series that TAP has been proud to host.
Unscripted: Film Edition with Tom Wilson and Shane Belcourt
This was a free community screening of Beautiful Scars, a Canadian documentary film directed by Shane Belcourt and released in 2022. Starring musician Tom Wilson and based in part on his 2017 memoir of the same name, the film depicts his exploration of the Mohawk heritage that was hidden from him by his adoptive parents, including his process of reconnecting and building a relationship with his birth mother after learning about this secret in his 50s. The film premiered at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival and received a Canadian Screen Award nominations (Best Biography or Arts Documentary Program or Series, Best Direction and Best Picture Editing in the Documentary Program) at the 11th Canadian Screen Awards in 2023.
Following the screening we moved into conversation with artist Tom Wilson and director Shane Belcourt. Our conversation was moderated by Josh Lambier, artistic director of WORDS.
In partnership with WORDS, we offered this as a hybrid event.
ABOUT TOM WILSON
Musically, Tom Wilson is known for his work with the bands Blackie & The Rodeo Kings, Junkhouse and Lee Harvey Osmond, the latter receiving a 2020 Juno Award for the album Mohawk. Wilson’s memoir, Beautiful Scars: Steeltown Secrets, Mohawk Skywalkers and the Road Home, in which he reveals the impact of discovering his Indigenous heritage at the age of 53, became a national bestseller. He was appointed as a Companion of the Order of Canada in June 2023 for, “his multifaceted contributions to the arts in Canada, notably as an iconic musician, as well as for his advocacy of Indigenous communities in Canada.” Decades ago he began dedicating more of his time and energy to his second passion, painting. Painting has become a way for him to connect with his Mohawk identity and convey his feelings on the injustices experienced by Indigenous peoples. The exhibit includes Fading Memories of Home, an installation piece by Tom located in TAP’s LAB203 Gallery. The idea for the installation with accompanying video and sound recording was seeded during a family dinner with Jane Lazare, Tom’s biological mother. She recalled a traumatic experience from residential school when the grade five teacher had asked the room of Indigenous students to look at those around them, and then told the class these would be the last Indians they would ever know.
ABOUT SHANE BELCOURT
Shane Belcourt is a two-time CSA-nominated Director, with award-winning narrative and documentary works in both film and TV. His debut feature film TKARONTO, had a theatrical release, was sold to SuperChannel and Air Canada, and was showcased in both the TIFF Indigenous Cinema Retrospective and the UCLA Film & Television Archive traveling exhibition, “Through Indian Eyes: Native American Cinema”. Shane also directed CHANIE WENJACK which Walrus Magazine noted as “the Heritage Minute Canada needs to see”. His most recent feature film, RED ROVER, premiered at the Whistler Film Festival, opened the Canadian Film Festival and was released in March 2020 to glowing reviews. On the documentary side of things, Shane directed KAHA:WI, which features dancer and choreographer Santee Smith. It premiered at the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, aired on APTN and CBC Docs, and won a CSC Award for Best Cinematography in 2016, along with a CSA Best Director nomination. Shane co-directed (with Lisa Jackson) the CBC one-hour INDICTMENT: THE CRIMES OF SHELLY CHARTIER which won Best Doc at imagineNATIVE. In the Fall of 2020, AMPLIFY, aired on APTN, which Shane created and showran. He was a Consulting Producer (writing room story editor) on CBC”s new drama series, THE TRICKSTER. Unscripted: Music Edition with Lido Pimienta hosted by Shad.
Unscripted: Music Edition with Rory Taillon
Heavier than folk, but not quite rock, Rory took us on an emotional rollercoaster with a performance of explosive highs and devastating lows. Singing in choirs and choral groups in his youth, this classically trained vocalist has taken these experiences and combined them in a somber atmosphere of looping guitars and drums. After the performance, we sat in conversation with Rory hosted by TAP Director Sandra De Salvo. They will dove into Rory’s musical journey, talked about his new album ‘now it’s quiet’, and explored his next creative projects.
Unscripted: Music Edition with The Pairs
We were joined for a special night of Unscripted the Music Series featuring London’s own award-winning harmonic folk trio The Pairs. After the performance we sat down with Noelle Frances Coughlin, Renée Coughlin, and Hillary Watson and engaged in an intimate conversation with the musicians to discuss their creative process, their working relationship as three songwriters and lead vocalists, and the projects the trio have in the works.
Our host for this session was Ryan Soulliere. Ryan is the associate producer for CBC London’s flagship show, London Morning. He also curates the very best music for the program, utilizing his community connections to shine a spotlight on homegrown talent.
ABOUT THE PAIRS
The Pairs are Noelle Frances Coughlin, Renée Coughlin, and Hillary Watson. Powered by soaring sister harmonies, this quirky trio's unbottled chemistry quickly connects them to their audience. With three distinct lead singer/songwriters, The Pairs offer a unique blend of music with stories of life's hope, hilarity, and hardship. These classically trained vocalists blur the line between the stage and the crowd as if we've pulled up a seat around their family's lively kitchen table. This award-winning group has been touring internationally in Canada, the USA, and Europe since 2022 and released their third studio album titled, "When Will We Find Our Way?" on October 13th 2023.

Unscripted: Music Edition with Misha Bower and Pete Hurst
We were joined for a special night of Unscripted: The Music Series featuring a new live show called Meetings by local musician and writer Misha Bower. A blend of music and storytelling, Meetings is set in a shifting support group context where Misha plays a series of characters confiding to their peers—the audience. For each character, she performed a monologue and song that crystalize a unique moment of personal disclosure. The song portion of the show featured accompaniment by Pete Hurst, a local sound technician who has put himself on the other side of the mixing desk to revisit his musical roots as an accompanying guitarist.
Audiences should know that Meetings highlights human journeys threaded with addiction, trauma and loss. It has a dynamic emotional tone that is automatically tender, but searches equally for vulnerability and the unexpected comedy so central to the art of coping.
The Unscripted conversation was hosted by Josh Lambier, Artistic Director of Words Festival and collaborative pillar in the London arts community.

Unscripted with Anthony Veilleux, Sarah Legault, and Jacqui Gallant.
As part of the Dollirium exhibition we featured in our gallery, we were joined by Anthony Veilleux, Sarah Legault, and Jacqui Gallant for an Unscripted: Speaker Edition. We explored how these artists use their artistic vision and skill sets to create charismatic characters with endearing stories. We also chatted about why they searched out other like-minded creators and developed opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and community.
This Unscripted event was led by Josh Lambier the Artistic Director of the Words Literary & Creative Arts Festival.
About Anthony Veilleux
(London, ON) Born in the late sixties into an Air Force family in Quebec, Canada as the last of six kids to an amazing pair of supportive and creative parents. Anthony found his creativity early on drawing on used computer punch cards his Mom brought home from work, making plasticine dinosaurs, aliens with tin foil armatures for stop-motion epics with the family super eight camera, monster mask sculptures on styrofoam wig forms, and fake bloody aftermaths of destruction with flesh coloured plasticine and morticians wax with syrup blood on the neighbourhood kids.
His artistic pursuits found focus while attending Beal Art in London, Ontario. Shortly after art school he landed an apprenticeship at Blue Dragon Tattoo here in London, which allowed him to make a comfortable living designing and applying“walking art” on many wonderful clients. Anthony is the current owner of 227 Tattoo. This has allowed him more freelancing opportunities in special effects make-up artist and sculptor. Some of Anthony’s proudest film contributions have been: John Fawcett’s Ginger Snaps, George Romero's Land of the Dead, Zach Snyder's 300, a few of the Resident Evil films, Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim and Ari Aster’s recent film Beau Is Afraid.
Anthony has never stopped honing his skills and showing in galleries with so many talented creative people helps fuel his creative ideas. His recent sculptures are an exploration of the beauty of the human and not so human form with a darker narrative, always enjoying both the final outcome and the journey to get there.
About Jacqui Gallant
(London, ON) Alongside her late partner Jason Wojceik, Jacqui Gallant funneled her creativity into Jay’s dream of opening a tattoo shop where together they could share their passion with other tattoo and body modification enthusiasts. In 1996 Addictive Tattoo opened its doors, and to this day holds the title of London Ontario’s longest running tattoo street shop.
In Jacqui’s personal time, she fell down the rabbit hole into the strange world of art dollmaking. As a maker and collector, Jacqui Gallant, would travel far and wide in order to meet other unusual like minded art dollmakers. It was a goal for Jacqui to one day host a space where doll artists could come together to learn, create and exhibit their off the beaten path works of art. In 2011, Jacqui opened Dollirium Art Doll Emporium in London, Ontario. During Dollirium’s short lifespan, it was the world's only international art doll gallery that supported over 80 artists from 22 countries around the world. Even though Dollirium shut its doors in the Fall of 2013, its legacy continues to live on, and Jacqui continues to create and stay connected with the art doll community at large.
