Small Press Spotlight

We’re excited to put the focus on RAID Press, independent publishing for creators, by creators, for our Small Press Spotlight this year. RAID has several projects in the pipeline focusing on independent creators. Joining us as we sit down in conversation with Ramón Pérez, Eric Vedder, Dax Gordine, and Sheldon Carter. Our conversation will be hosted by Brahm Wiseman from Heroes Comics, the biggest comic book store in Southwestern Ontario.

About Ramón Pérez

Ramón K Pérez is an established cartoonist, illustrator, and designer with over two decades experience in the creative field. He is a multiple Eisner and Harvey award winning artist and has additionally garnered such accolades as TheThe Honour Book and Official Selection 2008 Silver Birch Non-Fiction Awards, ForeWord Reviews' 2010 Book of the Year Award, and The Shuster Award for best graphic novel 2012, amongst numerous nominations, for his collaborative works in children’s literature, digital media, and comics.

Ramon is also the CEO of the prominent Royal Academy of Illustration & Design (RAID) a powerhouse creative agency and comic arts studio. Their repertoire of clients include Archaia, Marvel, DC, Dark Horse Comics, Owl Kids, Scholastic Canada, McClelland & Stewart, Lucasarts, Epitome Pictures, Hasbro, Wizards of the Coast, Clorox, The Cartoon Network, Fox media, CBC, amongst many more.

About Eric Vedder

Eric Vedder’s career has spanned over twenty five years in the entertainment industry. From comic book artist, illustrator, animator, painter to concept artist, writer and art director, he’s had the honour of working on many high profile projects. By day, he's currently the Director of Concept at Digital Extremes, a triple A studio responsible for the smash hit game, WARFRAME. By night, he works alongside S. M. Carter and The Raid Studios on the epic sci-fi/fantasy world of Aardehn, a cinematic novel set to release in 2024.

About Dax Gordine

Dax Gordine is an animator, concept artist, and illustrator, best known as the artist of Marvel Comics Giant-Sized Little Marvels.

His work delights fans on feature films, including Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Osmosis Jones, Eight Crazy Nights, and Curious George. He's also created concept art for the video game Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 & 3, and illustrated the Bravo Man webcomic.

About Sheldon Carter

S.M. CARTER is an author and game developer. As an author, his debut fantasy-heist novel, TO STEAL THE SUN, released in September of 2022 and is published by Raid Press. He has contributed to multiple comic anthologies and writes the ongoing cinematic novel series, AARDEHN, in collaboration with artist Eric Vedder. As a game developer, he is credited as creative director of THE DARKNESS 2, and is one of the creators of the smash-hit game WARFRAME.

About Brahm Wiseman

Brahm Wiseman is the owner of Heroes. He’s been the owner for 25 years of its 33 year existence.  The store, which is the biggest comic book store in southwestern Ontario, is cited as one of the most successful current retail interests in London's downtown core area. The store's history dates back to 1991, when it was founded by the Robinson family. Ownership changed hands in 2000 when Brahm Wiseman, who was hired as an employee in 1998, took over the company.
