Silence Leaks

Silence has weight. It gathers in spaces, bodies, recordings, images, objects, and histories. "Leaks" gives silence motion. A leak begins quietly. It seeps through cracks, stains surfaces, and alters what surrounds it. What seemed solid is exposed as porous.

Silence Leaks brings three distinct practices into proximity around these moments of seepage. A leak can be slow, persistent, almost imperceptible; by the time it becomes visible, a boundary has already been crossed. What is contained may already be moving through the structures that appear to hold it in place.

There is no single silence here, and no single way of leaking. Silence may be imposed, inhabited, inherited, or chosen. What passes through its boundaries does not emerge unchanged: it returns as residue, echo, distortion, or fragment, a trace of both what has travelled and what it has travelled through.

About the Artists:

Brittany/Andrew Forrest is a surrealist visual and literary artist. Her work explores silence, haunted perceptions, and the lingering effects of suppressed apparitions. She holds an honorary BFA from McMaster University and a master’s in fine arts from Western University, where she is completing a PhD in Art and Visual Culture.

Masha Kouznetsova’s work brings together analogue sound processes, performance, sculpture, and drawing/printmaking, with a focus on salvaged materials and site-responsive installations. Her practice and research are grounded in personal experiences of transience and the search for im/perceptible connections within/between geographic and cultural worlds she moves through.

Behnaz Fatemi is an Iranian-Canadian interdisciplinary artist, educator, and PhD student in Art and Visual Culture. Her work spans performance, installation, drawing, and sound, exploring diaspora, embodied knowledge, and archival silencing. Her work has been presented at CAFKA biennial, Idea Exchange, and Art Windsor-Essex.

Behnaz Fatemi, Masha Kouznetsova, and Brittany Forrest will be performing and hosting a short Q&A in the gallery on Thursday October 29th from 2:30PM - 4:00PM. All are welcome to this free event.

Silence Leaks has been curated by Behnaz Fatemi and is a mobile project of SATELLiTE Project Space.
