About The Event

Katherine Walmsley - Crow Mothers, Wise Women is in the Main Gallery from November 17 to December 12, 2026.

About the Exhibition:

Katherine Walmsley - Crow Mothers, Wise Women is an exhibition showcasing the life and artistic works of the late TAP resident artist Katherine Anne Walmsley.  For Katherine, crows represent transformation and wisdom, and are sacred messengers between our physical world and the spiritual one. In an interview from 2006, Katherine shared “I love crows. Crows, rooks and birds like that are very significant symbolically (to me). I like the saying, "if men had wings and bore black feathers, few would be clever enough to be crows." (original quote by Henry Ward Beecher)” Through a combination of Katherine’s oil painting, hooked rugs, and drawings, this exhibition shares the stories she left us after her passing last November. Katherine's family is honoured to share not only her art with you, but also her lasting legacy.

“The stories of our lives never truly disappear, as long as we have a curious enough audience waiting to discover them. At least, that’s what the crows told me.” —Charlotte Hegele (Curator & Katherine’s daughter).

About the Artist:

Throughout her life, Katherine was a fervent aesthete and tenacious creator of visual art in different media. In the 1990’s and early 2000’s she perfected the painting techniques of Renaissance Masters in oil and egg tempera. In 2006, she turned her attention to fibre art and revival of traditional Maritime rug hooking as part of the “Simply Hooked” guild. Katherine hooked in both the primitive and fine genres, looping dyed wool strands into fabric paintings of magnificent depth and delicacy. Katherine’s artistic merit and accomplishment were recognised with a long-term residency at The Arts Project, now TAP Centre for Creativity.  In 2005, Katherine became a member of the CMHA’s Mental Health Promotion Committee, raising awareness of mental health issues in London-Middlesex. Katherine bridged her passions for visual art and mental health by inaugurating the annual “Framing the Phoenix” art exhibition in 2006.

Join us on Friday November 20th from 3:30PM - 6:30PM for an opening reception to view the work. All are welcome to this free event.
