About The Event
IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED?
A theatrical stand-up show about bad relationships, worse boundaries, and doing very dumb things for love, IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED?
Would you fly across the planet for a crush? Ever had a “if we’re not married by 30, let’s get married” pact? What do you do when your ex takes all the sex toys? For the answers to these and more, come to this show. It’s about those kinds of things. Terrible teenage romance, no-boundaries twenties, and queer coming-of-age. You like that, don’t you? Oh and jokes about podcast bros. That’s cool, right? Do you like me now? IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED?
This is, believe it or not, part of happeningfish’s doctoral artistic work on emotional labour, affective labour, and transgender stand-up comedy, exploring the relationships between laughter as activism, the limits of allyship, self-deprecation and survival, and what we can understand about each other. But let’s be clear: it’s a stand-up show with a lot of embarrassing teenage romance jokes and jibes at the manosphere.
About the Artist:
After growing up right here in London, Ontario and studying theatre at U of T, happeningfish (Jamie MacDonald) packed his bags for Helsinki, Finland, in 2002—and simply failed to leave. Since then, he's been vanning across international stages from Brighton to Singapore, blending stand-up comedy with performance art. A self-described professional queer nuisance, happeningfish is a boundary-shattering force of nature who snagged Finland's Comedian of the Year in 2016. He brandishes his transgender experience with biting commentary, emotional exposure, and queer butt jokes. He's currently working on a PhD concerning queer butt jokes at the University of the Arts Helsinki. Co-creator of the legendary queer cabaret Punch Up! (winner of multiple awards in Finland) and Helsinki's Feminist Comedy Night, 'fish is a riotous Nordic queer comedy pioneer.
